Everything is Illuminated

There is nothing like an illuminating cream to turn a very bad skin day around and give you a healthy glow on the outside even if you're not feeling too hot on the inside. It's a makeup must-have for me and these three illuminators by Benefit, Urban Decay and Yves Saint Laurent are at the top of my illuminating list and are also some of my favourite beauty products ever.

YSL, Benefit and Urban Decay all have a habit of creating products that are a little bit special and unique to themselves but they also make such superior versions of everything from eyeliner to concealers and these three brightening products are no exception.

"That Gal" Brightening Face Primer by Benefit

"That Gal" by Benefit was my first illuminator and is still my all time favourite. In fact it was one of the first Benefit products I ever bought and what really drew me to the brand then was their wide range of products that were simply created to enliven your skin and give it a dewy glow; a radiance that could brighten up any skin sin. It's one of Benefit's best-selling products and has been around for years which is a testament to its effectiveness and the adoration customers have for it. I've never gotten through a bottle of a product faster and I've been out of it for ages now, hence using this trial size in the images here, so it's at the very top of my beauty wish list at present.

The effect of "That Gal" is so subtle in ways but really overhauls the appearance of your skin, whether you're wearing foundation with it or not. The texture is so gorgeous; it's light and creamy and a very light peachy pink colour but once applied blends into your skin perfectly to give it a subtle, overall glow, and it absorbs really quickly and effectively. Also, the smell of it is a major draw for me. It's so gorgeous and mellow, not remotely overpowering but I find it very soothing and calming.

I hereby profess that all makeup kits should have "That Gal" included in them. I find it great to pop it into my bag to reapply dabs of it, especially on my cheeks, throughout the day to give my face a radiance boost.

"That Gal" by Benefit is available from Benefit Boutique, South William St, Dublin 2 and from Benefit counters nationwide and costs €32.

Le Teint Touche Éclat Rose Gold Primer by Yves Saint Laurent

You may remember some months ago me raving on about the most beautiful makeup range I'd ever come across from Yves Saint Laurent with their limited edition Rose Gold Collection and this "primer" Le Teint Touche Éclat Concentre D'Or Rose was the product I was drawn to the most because the effect it has on your skin is so impressive.

YSL are well known for their foundations, primers and their most renowned product Touche Éclat and with this beautiful Rose Gold Illuminator you have the very best of what YSL makeup has to offer.

A little goes a very long way with this lightweight cream and, like the others, it can be applied on its own all over; as a primer for foundation; or to dab selectively on the parts of your face you'd like illuminated. The effect it has on your appearance is almost like using a filter on Instagram. The pinky tone and the tiny gold flecks give your skin this warm, soft focus appearance and lends to a really romantic look.

This works especially well when used with light foundation and a pink blush and is such a huge treat to have in your makeup bag to give your skin the most beautiful, healthy glow. This product, and the whole range, is a little extra special and, since it's limited edition and available only at YSL counters in larger Boots' stores, it's definitely one to nab now before it disappears. Since you only need a tiny amount at a time it lasts forever too!

YSL's Le Teint Touche Éclat Concentre D'Or Rose is limited edition as part of the Rose Gold Collection and is available exclusively from Boots and costs €40.

Naked Skin Illuminating Beauty Balm by Urban Decay

Urban Decay has come up with something a little bit special here with this Naked Skin Illuminating Beauty Balm, especially for someone like me who just cannot seem to ever get into the hang of wearing foundation every day but likes a little bit of radiance, loves a product that works in the background over time to improve your skin in the long run - and it has SPF 20!

This product differs in several ways from the other two reviewed above because it does a number of things at once but, to be honest, what really drew me once again was the word "illuminating" and that it certainly does. With the other two, I am less inclined to go full out application all over my face but this particular product is made for that.

I was a little surprised when I tested it on my hand first, it was much darker - almost bronzier - than I expected initially, which for someone who always airs on the side of pale, was a bit off-putting but, once I had applied it to my face my concerns were silenced. It certainly isn't dark and immediately you are left with a fine, subtle glow and it lights up your face all over. With the YSL and Benefit products you are much more likely to apply these to specific areas you want brightened and highlighted but this works best to apply once for an overall, slightly more subtle glow.

I was quite surprised just how many benefits there was to this balm. First, when you apply it, you get a lovely, almost minty, feeling all over your face which is really refreshing and enlivening when applied first thing in the morning. It works to minimize pores, fine lines, and redness so your skin looks clear and fresh, without having to go down the foundation route. It's a really great product for everyday use as it brightens up your face, covers up imperfections, and promises to make your skin firmer and more lifted after eight weeks of daily use.

This can be used on its own, as a primer for foundation, or on top of your makeup to give it a radiant boost. It's a little wonder product and such a great find and another genius addition to Urban Decay's Naked Range!

Urban Decay's Naked Skin Illuminating Balm with SPF20 is available from Urban Decay counters across the country from Debenhams counters and The House of Fraser and costs €29
