In the Sticks: No7, Topshop, Revlon and Essence

Gone are the days when eyeliner and lipliner were the only sticks in your makeup mag. A new, very welcome trend, has arrived where you can get your blush and real lip sticks in a chubby stick/crayon format and it's given make up application a lot more control - and your handbag a bit more space!

I've been trying out some of the more notable, affordable sticks and here are my pick of the bunch:

1. No7 Pop & Glow Cream Blush Stick in Rose Blossom
This is one of my favourite blushes in a while for three reasons: 1. This is the new stick trend at its best; the lovely round crayon makes application both a dream and a doddle for rosey-hue cheek apples. Just pop and glow as the name directs! 2. The texture is so creamy and delightful, it glides on like a treat for a subtle matte look. 3. This applies to the Pop & Glow Stick in Rose Blossom alone from this range; this colour is just the perfect sublte rosy hue to make you glow without blush overkill. You can layer this up to whatever suits you, depending on how flushed you like your blush! The only downside is that is doesn't have stay all day abilities, you might get about three hours of glow before it starts to fade, so reapplication will be required. Handy that the stick pops so easily in and out of your handbag! This one is a personal favourite, in case you hadn't guessed. I'm seriously thinking of buying a few in case they for some reason stop making them! My pick of the makeup stick bunch!
Available from Boots.

2. Topshop Lip Stick in Powder Room
This was my first experience of this type of chubby make up stick and Topshop have now renamed the priduct Lip Crayon, quite appropriately. These crayon sticks are great for lipstick application in my opinion, it's why I like them so much; you have much more control than traditional lipsticks with this thick pencil format so it's really like a lip liner and lipstick in one! I bought Powder Room two years ago and have had it in my bag regularly as a nice subtle, matte, pinky day time shade. The stay all day quality isn't too bad, it lasts longer than I expected. Topshop makeup was completely unexplored by me until I bought this but I've since learned that they have a really good range of on trend colours to suit everyone.
Available from Topshop.

 3. Revlon Colorburst Matte Balm in Striking Spectacular
For a very long time I had such a fear of red, or any other striking colour, lipstick. It's hard to get it right and also hard to find one that stays all day without straying or smudging. A bright red is an absolute classic and everyone should have at least one in their makeup bag but it's a daring venture many people never explore. However, this Revlon stick/crayon is a bit of a game changer as far as I'm concerned. This was also my very first Revlon makeup purchase; I'm not sure why but after this I will be investigating the brand further. Striking Spectacular glides on so smoothly that application of such a pigmented shade is far simpler than it would be with a traditional lipstick. The colour is indeed extremely striking, as the name suggests, and it suits the above No7 Pop & Glow cream blush just beautifully for a very classic red lips, slightly blushed cheeks look. Again, the crayon stick means you can carefully line the lips then colour the rest in once the tricky bit has been completed. The colour almost stains the lips and it's really moisturising so the combination of stain and moisture means it lasts for hours too, which is another bonus of this stick. After the success of this shade I can't wait to try more!
Available from pharmacies nationwide.

4. Essence Blush Stick in Pretty in Pink
Now for the budget pick of the lot! Coming in at €3.09, this one might be a winner if all it served was to test whether you liked blush sticks or not! But there is much more to it than that to be fair. Essence is a brand available in Penny's which I, in the early days walked by, being thankfully past the days of very cheap makeup (namely my teens). But, I once had to buy a nail polish very last minute before a wedding and actually quite fell for Essence's pretty spectacular nail polish range. You many not be getting a very long-lasting cosmetic but the range of fun colours and quite on trend selection of shades makes Essence a bit of a find. Pretty in Pink is pretty much as it promises and leaves a very dewy hue on your cheeks that gives you a very natural flushed look. It's very creamy, more so than the No7 stick, and absorbs quite quickly into your skin. It may not last for more than an hour but it's a surprise gem on the list. While the other three can be used for both cheeks and lips if you're feeling adventurous, this one is a little underwhelming on the lips and blink and it's gone. However, for a pretty pink hue, it's not half bad, just don't expect a flushed all day look without having to be generous with the reapplications!
Available from Penny's.
